Simon Fang – Personal Statement

I am Simon Fang, born in 1977. After completing my undergraduate studies, I pursued a Master’s degree in International Law at Soochow University, specializing in International Trade Law, and graduated in 2009. Upon completing military service in July 2010, I entered the workforce and have been working ever since.

My legal background has significantly shaped my meticulous analytical skills, sound judgment, and ability to apply my knowledge to assist those in need, rather than merely honing the argumentative nature typical of legal professionals. During graduate school, I was invited to present a paper at an International Economic Law Conference in Kazakhstan and served as a research assistant at the WTO Center of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, focusing on WTO-related issues and providing analytical insights to relevant organizations.

After completing my military service, I entered the maritime shipping industry (with Hong Kong and French companies) to apply my expertise. I immersed myself in relevant Chinese and English materials to quickly adapt to the new field. My responsibilities included:

  • Handling international cargo damage claims and coordinating with global lawyers for litigation evaluation and monitoring.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal requirements at worldwide locations, arranging insurance plans, and drafting and reviewing contracts, including terminal agreements, joint service agreements, agency contracts, and charter parties.
  • Assisting in litigation cases in Taiwan by drafting pleadings and representing the company in court.
  • Resolving disputes raised by various departments, such as issues arising from joint ventures, agency conflicts, cargo owner disputes, and disagreements with international shipowners.

Despite my busy schedule and extensive experience in the international transportation industry, I have continually sought learning opportunities. I participated in various training courses on international transportation and insurance law, earning multiple certifications, including the ICS Maritime Insurance certificate.

Through my career, I have not only enhanced my professional knowledge and judgment but also developed direct engagement skills with senior executives worldwide and cross-cultural collaboration capabilities. My leadership has grown to oversee larger teams, and I firmly believe that a successful team thrives on mutual trust and collaborative growth, not just strong leadership. I uphold this philosophy in working with my team to provide maximum support for the company.

In July 2017, to broaden my knowledge and capabilities in different fields, I joined YUSEN LOGISTICS as Legal Manager. My key contributions included:

  • Establishing legal and compliance structures and mechanisms.
  • Enhancing practical experience in air freight, NVOCC shipping, and warehouse logistics management.
  • Effectively reorganizing insurance planning and strictly controlling external legal fees to minimize unnecessary expenses and maximize in-house value.
  • Leading a major acquisition project in collaboration with an international law firm, successfully completing the acquisition and post-merger integration.

In 2018, I was promoted to Senior Manager of the Business Planning Department, overseeing the Business Planning, Legal & Insurance, and General Affairs departments. My responsibilities included:

  • Reviewing and optimizing corporate management processes and establishing supplier management systems.
  • Assisting with internal audits, implementing and monitoring risk control mechanisms, and conducting compliance training.
  • Improving contract management, cost controls, and participating in annual budgeting and operational planning for various departments.
  • Participating in quarterly regional business meetings in Asia and collaborating on operations optimization.

In 2019, I was further promoted to Associate General Manager of the Business Planning Department. In this role, I directly reported to the Japanese chairman, executed projects assigned by the chairman and the Japanese headquarters, and extended corporate systems to subsidiaries. I also led the implementation of occupational safety systems and supervised pandemic response measures during COVID-19 to ensure operational continuity.

In 2022, I transitioned to the food and beverage franchise industry, joining Young Qin International, Taiwan’s first publicly listed breakfast franchise chain, as Chief Legal Officer and Director of the CEO’s Office. I spearheaded initiatives including:

  • Overhauling the legal management structure and promoting electronic signing and digital management of franchise agreements, significantly reducing the workload for franchise operations supervisors.
  • Strengthening global intellectual property planning and leading the application for Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDD) for international franchise qualifications.
  • Serving as Spokesperson and Head of the Sustainability Office from late 2022 to the end of 2023. My duties included handling media and investor relations, drafting monthly operational press releases, and participating in public earnings conferences and external speaking engagements on corporate sustainability, international development, and business history.

Following the pandemic, I leveraged my language skills and international experience to participate in overseas projects, including market research in the U.S. and business expansion negotiations with Southeast Asian agents, formulating future business blueprints.
